The newest psychological horror flick from director Christopher Smith stars Jena Malone as Grace, a self-proclaimed atheist investigating the death of her brother. Following her brother’s alleged suicide, she finds herself at a remote Scottish convent where her brother once resided as a priest. While the nuns at the convent tell Grace he jumped from the nearby cliffs willingly, she believes otherwise. As she begins her inquiry alongside the assistance of a Vatican priest named Father Romero, played by Danny Huston, she quickly discovers murder, sacrilege, and a distributing truth about her own past she never intended to uncover.
Thetrailer forConsecrationrecently dropped, and there’s no shortage ofperfectly timed jump scaresas well as disturbing imagery sure to ignite the interest of horror fans. The trailer opens with Grace in a morgue crying at the sight of her deceased brother. Following those events, she heads to the monastery where he used to live to find out what really happened. Viewers are then met by Father Romero, the Vatican priest meant to “bring transparency to this tragedy.” As Grace is introduced to those at the convent, it’s clear they are hiding something regarding her brother’s death. Here is a full breakdown of the newConsecrationtrailer.

Radical Beliefs Are at Play
As the trailer unfolds, radical beliefs are on full display as the mother superior at the convent tells Grace how much her brother was loved before “he fell into darkness,” clearly imposing judgment on whatever Grace’s brother was doing prior to his death. It implied he was different from the nuns around him and their radical beliefs at the remote convent.

As Grace and Father Romero walk the grounds of the convent, he talks about the “ultimate confessional” near the beach in which nuns would “willingly” fall to their death. Within the vicinity of the convent, a church of sorts can be seen at the top of a cliff with a windswept beach below. However, unlike most churches, the back of this one sits open and flush with the cliff. He continues to explain the nuns would take a step back for every sin they committed until they plunged to the ground below and died. Although he colorfully describes it by saying that “God caught them,” which should be the biggest indicator as to the kind of radical religiosity present in the film.
The Nuns Are Everywhere
There’s no shortage of disturbing nuns as the trailer forConsecrationprogresses. They’re everywhere in the new horror flick. From eerie singing to continuously announcing herself with a “peek-a-boo,” one nun, in particular, takes the cake for subtle creepiness. While staying at the convent during her inquiry, Grace quickly discovers oddities among the nuns she encounters. Images of nuns cleaning what appears to be blood from a white floor, eerie nuns who appear and then disappear out of nowhere, and rows of nuns laid out on the floor in creepy formations are all just a few of the images meant to spook the viewer as shrieking music plays in the background. While the nuns present multiple images of order throughout the trailer, such images only garner feelings of the macabre given the context. Toward the end of the trailer, Grace even witnesses a nun cut her own arm with a knife after retreating to some sort of cellar only to see that same nun pop up behind her with a scratch. All is clearly not what it seems.
Something Supernatural Could Be at Work
As the trailer continues to unfold, either something more supernatural is at play or Grace is losing her mind as she begins to see things that aren’t there. She goes on to explain to someone not seen on screen that she believes she’s discovered something her brother was afraid of,possibly something supernaturalthe nuns are protecting.

She then visits someone in prison who she seems to seek information about regarding the convent, but what he reveals is unlikely to reassure her. When she discloses her belief that everyone around her is lying, the man simply laughs before violently banging his head against the glass between them.
Everything Ends with Blood
As the trailer wraps up, there’s no shortage of blood with Grace somehow at the center. She can be seen in white clothing, the same worn by the nuns, covered in blood. Although there’s no indication such scenes are rooted in reality. Given the trailer’s propensity for the supernatural it could be possible she’s imaged or dreamed those occurrences. The trailer closes with Grace in what appears to be a hospital bed as the creepy “peek-a-boo”nun lingers over her. The circumstances of the scene are left to the imagination of the viewer as the trailer ends.
Consecrationwill be released in select theaters beginning February 10, then it will be available on demand the following month on March 3.
