The Conjuring 3is coming our way next year and Patrick Wilson has opened up a bit about the experience. Wilson has played paranormal investigator Ed Warren in the universe alongside Vera Farmiga, who plays his wife and partner Lorraine Warren. The key difference with this one is that horror master James Wan, who helmed the first two main entries in the series, isn’t directing this time around. But as Wilson tells it, things went fantastic all the same, even if it’s different.

More specifically, how the experience went with Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona) in the director’s chair. For Wilson, it was comforting knowing James Wan still had a strong hand in it, but he also had nothing but nice things to say about Chaves. Here’s what Wilson had to say.
“Overall, fantastic. I knew going into it that James had a real strong hand in the story and script, and I talked to him a lot about it. Then, once I met [director] Michael Chaves, his energy, his skillset and his passion for it was really infectious. I knew that he was gonna take the reins, both with great respect, but still as its own passion. The process was fantastic, and it’s a much different feel. It’s still the same bones;it’s still very much Ed and Lorraine. Again, we are pushing our characters to places they haven’t gone, but the film will be a really nice addition because it’s definitely a different beast. Pun intended.”
While story details remain somewhat under wraps, it’s said this new chapter will center on a man who is on trial for murder and claims he waspossessed by a demonat the time of the crime. That is quite the departure from the first two main Conjuring movies which were, more or less, haunted house/possession movies. Adding in the legal/crime thriller element should shake things up.
As for Michael Chaves,The Curse of La Llorona, which was released earlier this year, wound up being something of a secret Conjuring spin-off. The movie was met with somewhat mixed reviews, but went on to gross $122 million worldwide. James Wan and Warner Bros. liked him enough to trust him withThe Conjuring 3. Speaking further, Patrick Wilson expressed his excitement to return to the flagship series in the ever-expandingConjuring horror universe.
“It was exciting; it was really, really exciting. Because of the spinoffs, when you come back to the flagship movies, I want to feel like, ‘OK, now we’re back in the Conjuring world.’ There’s a different weight to those movies just in scope alone, budget, time to shoot it and all that stuff. It’s got great producers, and honestly, a super happy and supportive studio. So it’s a lot of positivity even though you’re dealing with a lot of negative demons. I can’t wait.”
To date, the Conjuring universe movies have grossed more than $1.9 billion worldwide. Though, generally speaking, the spin-offs haven’t quite lived up to the prestige associated with The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2. Will it be the same without James Wan at the helm?
