SlashGear Week In Review - Week 18 2010
Welcome to the latest edition of the SlashGear Week in Review! This week we saw the newBlackberry Bold 9650get official. The handset should be landing on carriers soon. The Gizmodo editor that wrote the story about the iPhone HD that was found in the bar after Gawker purchased the device had hishome raidedthis week. California’s R.E.A.C.T task force seized some of the editor’s gear in the raid.
Quirky unveiled a cool modular swiss army knife this week called theSwitch. The thing lets the user choose how thick it is and what tools are on it. Reviews of the AMD Phenom II X6 turned up all over the place this week as the processor went official. Werounded upsome of the reviews on Tuesday.
The MicrosoftKin ROMsurfaced this week and hinted that the devices would be coming to AT&T, T-Mobile and some other carriers. On Wednesday we learned that some of the pre-orderedWiFi 3G iPadswere shipping. Geeks everywhere were happy.
Mid-week we also spied the8-bit guitarand found that the thing stokes some serious geek lust. The guitar was created as a senior project by its builder. TheSagem Pumaphone has cleared the FCC in the US. The device has a 2.8-inch touchscreen and the launch is expected in H2 2011.
HP announced those week that is hadbought ailing Palm for $1.2 billion. That is a lot of money for WebOS; I hope HP can make something out of it. The purchase of Palm led Palm shareholders tostart an investigationafter some felt they were shortchanged in the deal. I would think they would be glad to be saved form a sinking ship rather than complaining about how large the life raft was.
TheZo personal subwooferwas unveiled this week promising 12-inch sub bass in a package the size of an iPod nano. The thing improves the bass in music from any standard headphone jack sporting gadget. A newpatent from Appleturned up late in the week for invisible buttons. It would certainly be cool to be able to control things by touching certain sections of the notebook.
Those unlucky souls that found the iPhone HD prototypehave been outedby Wired. The guys face possible felony counts for their part in the leak of the new device. We heard this week that the HP Slate had been cancelled. HP remained mum on the news, but some HP sources have stepped up and claim that theSlate is not deadafter all. I bet it gets WebOS.
