According to sources known by Kotaku, Microsoft are on the brink of acquiring Obsidian, known for such RPG titles asPillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.

Rumour: Microsoft are in the Process of Acquiring Obsidian

While it is currently unknown how far down the line they are with this deal, sources close to Kotaku have shared that “It’s a matter of when, not if” making it sound that this is more than likely. While some deals do fall apart before they reach a conclusion, another source said it’s “90%” finished.

Obsidian have been known for their RPG games such as Knights of the Old Republic, Fallout: New Vegas and most recentlyPillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. But it hasn’t been smooth sailing for Obsidian, with struggles with finances in 2012. They then launched with the help of KickstarterPillars of Eternity. Working with Microsoft will offer the developer a sturdier footing for projects. Microsoft have spoken on the subject saying “We do not comment on rumors or speculation”.

It was late last year 2017 when Obsidian had announced they were developing a new RPG, which is to be published by Private Division, a company under 2k Games set to support mid-sized titles. How this acquisition would affect the company is unknown, whether Microsoft would simply buy out the contract is one option. Obsidian have not shared which platforms that the RPG would be released for.

While it is our policy not to comment on rumors or speculation, we look forward to publishing the upcoming RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, and remain confident in the team there to deliver an outstanding game.

Microsoft have not been quiet this year with acquiring four studios which included Playground Games known for Forza Horizon, Ninja Theory known forHellblade,Compulsion Games known forWe Happy FewandMojangbest known for Minecraft.

HavingObsidianunder their belt could bode well for Microsoft, helping them fill the RPG market that has been covered pretty well by Playstation. But it’s not the first time that Obsidian has teamed up with Microsoft, previously they were to release an Xbox exclusive RPG title called Stormlands, but due to a difference in opinions the project was scrapped. However, a lot has changed since 2012 with new leads heading the company now.
