Hideo Kojimahas revealed thatPhysintis still in the"conceptual phase"of development. In fact, the creator ofDeath Strandingis currently theonly person at Kojima Productionsworking on thisspiritual successor to Metal Gear. His statements to IndieWire align with the previously mentioned timeline he gave back in May: we likely won’t get to play thisSony-backed title for another five or six years.
Hideo Kojima Says Physint Is Still in the Concept Phase
When asked what he’s focusing on now thatDeath Stranding 2: On the Beachhas been out for a month, Kojima explained:
“Well, I’m analyzing player data from around the world — what kinds of weapons they use, the routes they take, all of that,“he said.“I’m also identifying small bugs here and there and deciding what needs to be fixed.”

Meanwhile,Kojima Productions is also working onOD, a horror game funded and published byXbox Game Studiosthat will be played viaXbox Cloud Gaming, Microsoft’s cloud platform.
This title, which featuresfilmmaker Jordan Peele(Get Out,NOPE) as a collaborator, was first revealed in a teaser trailer at the end of 2023 — though the partnership with Microsoft was originally announced back in June 2022.
Despite that, Kojima is only now starting toactively participate in the development ofOD:
“I’ve also started working with the team onOD, because that’s a new project,“he said.
And I’m working onPhysintby myself for now since it’s still in the conceptual phase.”
Physint Aims to Break the Line Between Games and Movies
What’s clear is that — given today’s standard development timelines — it’ll beyears before we get to play eitherODorPhysint.Physint, first revealed inFebruary 2024, is described as anext-gen action and espionage game. It’s being made in collaboration withColumbia Picturesand aims to not onlyrevive the essence of Metal Gear, but to alsoblur the line between cinema and interactive media.
