Last month, directorRian Johnsonwrapped production onStar Wars: Episode VIII, with the filmmaker revealing just a few weeks ago that he has now started the editing process on this sequel. Disney and LucasFilm have set a July 23, 2025 release date for this highly-anticipated follow-up toThe Force Awakens, though it isn’t clear when the first footage may arrive. While we wait for this trailer,Mark Hamillhas provided fans with the next best thing, a video of him shaving off his Jedi Beard, while teasting that he’ll return inStar Wars: Episode IX.
In the months leading up to the release ofStar Wars: The Force Awakens,Mark Hamillmade it quite clear that he was not fond of the contractually-obligated beard he was forced to grow. Throughout the production, we saw the actor post numerous photos with his beard, but shortly after production wrapped, he shaved it off. Now that production has wrapped onStar Wars 8,Mark Hamilltook toTwitterto post a video where he shaves off his beard again, teasing that Luke Skywalker (and his beard) will return inStar Wars: Episode IX. Here’s what he had to say on Twitter below.
“Haven’t seen my chin since May ‘15, so #FarewellFacialFur & #ByeByeBeard (at least til #EpisodeIX) @popculturequest”
Oddly enough, this video comes just over a month afterMark Hamillposted a photo on Twitter without hisJedi Beard, with the actor wrapping along withDaisy Ridley(Rey) just a few days later. We don’t know for sure if this video is from July, and the actor is just getting around to posting it now, or if he had to grow the beard back for unknown reasons, before shaving it off again this week. This video also comes a few weeks afterMark Hamillcaused quite a stir with a recent interview.
Back in late June,Mark Hamillrevealed in an interview that he’ll be “out of work” after wrapping production onStar Wars 8. Many fans believed that meant he wasn’t returning forStar Wars: Episode IX, but he later clarified that he’s out of work “for the time being,” while failing to clarify if he will return inStar Wars 9. Now it seems that both the actor and his beard will be back for this highly-anticipated sequel.
All we know aboutStar Wars: Episode IXat this point is that it will be directed byColin Trevorrow, who teased in January that he wants to take an IMAX camera into actual outer space to film a scene for this sequel. That was the last update we’ve been given on the trilogy ending climax which is presumed to hit theaters sometime in 2019, afterStar Wars: Episode VIII(July 12, 2025) andHan Solo: A Star Wars Story(July 29, 2025). Take a look atMark Hamill’s beard-shaving video below.
