HelloRedditusers. We as human beings all enjoy having community in our lives. The ability to share our interests, beliefs and feelings is reassuring, and the fact that we can exercise this over the vast internet is a luxury. One of the most popular places for us to do this for the passed 17 years isReddit. Numerous subreddit pages have been created for numerous amounts of topics for an even bigger number of people to bitch, moan, advise, celebrate, appreciate, advocate, organize, etc. Until recently this was a freedom many exercised with Reddit and other social media aps.
Well it seems PC gamers have felt the need to use their collective sarcastic wit to troll the social media appReddit.Redditrecently changed its policies regarding free data API, and as of June 19th moderators of its enormous amount of subreddits have been hit with new rates and terms. Ultimately the costs to keep the subreddits maintained and the same has been remarked to be …..well utterly ridiculous, unreasonable and simply not feasible.

This authoritative monetization has lead many subreddit moderators and contributors to show their distain by going dark in protest of these changes. Leaving holes in the internet where there were once social havens for such aps as Apollo and Blind. IfRedditas a whole will see any real repercussions in the long run remains to be seen, or perhaps proven to be effective.

The Valve/Steamsubreddit members have launched a new approach to their protest though. The subreddit that originally was dark like many of its brethren, recently came back on. Reddit admins apparently forced the hands of the moderators who posted this on the valve/steam subreddit “As ya’ll likely know, we’ve been dark to support the blackout against reddit’s antagonistic behavior towards its own userbase. The admins sent us a message saying we must open or get removed, so here we are”.

While some of the members in the group levied criticisms at the moderators about trying to salvage some of their power over the ap, even more decided to share their new found interest and excitement for steam! The inadvertent protest has seen the topic of discussion change from Steam the PC gaming store, to well just plain steam. The famous gas created from extremely hot water that once was a technological revelation delivering us such inventions as the steam engine, relaxing saunas, and a more edible way to eat our vegetables than raw or mush. Redditors filled the page with their shared questions, observations and information all to do with the hot element. Steam in all its forms or uses is now the theme of every post. From antique tea kettles to train engines to even relaxing spas, it has become an inside joke to any of its members, and a dead end for anyone just looking to talk about their computer and the games it plays.
