On Wednesday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced the list of nominations for Golden Globe Awards 2021. Just like every year, there came in snubs and surprises. Some shows went critically un-acclaimed while some got surprising recognition.
Leading with a total of 6 nominations in the motion picture category is David Fincher’sMankand dominating the TV category is the Netflix dramaThe Crownwith 6 nominations as well.
What came in as a surprise to many was the nomination of 3 women in the best director category – it is for the first time that more than one has been shortlisted in a single year. Regina King, Chloe Zhao, and Emerald Fennell are up for the prize, which had only previously nominated five women in the Golden Globes’ 77-year history.
Netflix dominated the competition with 42 total nominations for its movies and shows, includingMank,The Trial of the Chicago 7,The Queen’s Gambit,andThe Crown. Amazon, home toBorat Subsequent MoviefilmandSmall Axe, followed with 10 nods, while Hulu also picked up 10 nominations for releases likeNormal PeopleandPalm Springs.
Lily Collins received a nomination for her Netflix hitEmily In Paris.However, what baffled fans the most was the snubbing of Michaela Coel or her acclaimed BBC dramaI May Destroy You. The show which was a critical favorite last year didn’t garner any Golden Globe nominations. The drama follows the story of Arabella who after being sexually assaulted in a nightclub, is forced to reassess everything, including her career, friends and family. Fans call this snub an affront to quality television.

Not justI May Destroy You,Spike Lee’s war drama,Da 5 Bloods, which received crazy good reviews surprisingly did not receive a single nod.Zendaya didn’t get a nomination forMalcolm & Marie, the cast ofLovecraft Countrydidn’t get any nominations for their individual performances, Steven Yeun was nowhere to be found for his work inMinari, and many more.
Al Pacino’s nomination in the Best Television Actor – Drama Series category came in as a surprise to many as his performance in Hunters is far from his best work. WhileThe Little Thingscame out only a few days ago, the movie has earned Jared Leto a Golden Globe nomination for his performance. His work was not particularly singled out by critics for praise.
The awards will air live on Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. PT on NBC. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return to host the Golden Globes, after previously emceeing the ceremony from 2013 to 2015.
