Jurassic World Rebirthroared into theaters and easily won theFourth of Julyweekendbox officebecause there simply wasn’t any competition to legitimately challenge the latest feature film in Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s beloved franchise. Director Gareth Edwards’ flashy dinosaur movie made an estimated $147.3 million over its opening weekend to secure the top spot in domestic theaters, and on the surface that appears to be an extraordinary number. Unfortunately, when investigated more deeply, the harsh reality is that it took five days for theScarlett Johansson-ledJurassic World Rebirthto reach that amount of money. So, when one weighs its three-day total ($91.5 million) against the rest of the movie saga, it becomes clear the latestJurassicentry simply doesn’t measure up to the previous trilogy, which starred Chris Pratt.

There have been sevenJurassicfeature films in total, and all the entries in the Pratt-led trilogy boast the highest-grossing debuts ever for the saga. It’s also important to point out that all three of Pratt’s on-screen adventures (Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Jurassic World Dominion) made considerably more money over their respective opening weekends thanJurassic World Rebirth, and they only needed three days, not five, to accomplish the feat. Jurassic Park Franchise: Best Opening Weekends Domestically (Three-Day Unadjusted for Inflation)

Universal and Amblin’s decision to reboot their film franchise with a new cast of characters, which sadly doesn’t include Pratt, may have cost the studio dearly in the long run. Johannson is a wonderful actress, but it’s clear that her new character, Zora Bennett, can’t hold a candle to Pratt’s protagonist, Owen Grady, when it comes to drawing audiences into theaters. True, the latest entry is already flirting with $320 million globally against a reported production budget of $180 million to $250 million, depending on the source. Perhaps, though,Jurassic World Rebirthwould have performed better financially had the powers that be decided to cast both Johannson and Pratt in the dinosaur flick and combine their international star power to attract bigger crowds.

Last weekend’s champion,F1, couldn’t keep pace withJurassic World Rebirthand had to settle for the No. 2 spot over the weekend with an estimated $26.1 million (three-day) domestically. However, this time next week, both flicks will likely just be afterthoughts in the minds of movie lovers because James Gunn’sSupermanfinally takes flight, but until David Corenswet arrives on-screen as the DCU’s Man of Steel,Jurassic World Rebirthcan revel in the fact that the film did set a long holiday weekend record (below):

Next weekend, things heat up considerably asSupermanjoinsthe 2025 box officewhen James Gunn’s film hits theaters on July 11. It’s a conundrum when trying to understand why the studio heads behindDon’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonightand the Henry Golding-ledDaniela Foreverwould ever consider opening their movies up against the Man of Steel’s return to the big screen — but that’s exactly what distributors Sony Classic Pictures and Filmax International decided to do. Neither will be able to compete withSupermanfinancially, as the first big-screen entry in the DCU is predicted to make massive moolah in the neighborhood of $90 million to $145 million, depending on the source.
