Valkyrie Elysium features flashy and fast-paced combat, which is reminiscent of Devil May Cry. Fighting extremely well is second nature to you because of who you are. As such, you can easily move from one point to the next by charging at foes and dodging as needed. Additionally, you are adept at wielding multiple weapons including but not limited to a sword and spear. With these, you can throw enemies up in the air or attack them from above. What makes every encounter exhilarating are the stop animations themselves every time an enemy is attacked, showing how heavy your hits land.
Furthermore, you have companions known as the Einherjar or highly skilled spirit warriors to provide aid in the form of elemental bonuses. The ones that have been introduced so far are Christopher, a lancer, together with Tycho who has abilities like a fire mage. In the most recent gameplay footage, Amicia is able to instantly kill enemies by stabbing them in the jaw. Because of Amicia’s experience, she can easily return to stealth mode to recover her bearings and perform counterattacks as needed.
Meanwhile, Hugo now has the ability to control hundreds of rats to consume the skin and bones of his foes. Another RPG that is being published and developed by Square Enix isHarvestella, which blends Stardew Valley with Final Fantasy. This is a life-sim,Sandbox RPGwhere players are given the freedom to farm for hours on end by planting seeds and gathering crops. Of course, it is not all about the plants since you will have to tend to the needs of your animals and engage in fishing to cook delicious meals that will aid you in your travels.
Amidst the seemingly simple and calm life, you are confronted with a huge dilemma, which is the arrival of the Quietus. This is a precarious event that destroys every crop you have taken care of due to extreme weather changes. In fact, it is also harmful to the citizens themselves. The Quietus appears every time the season changes so you must prepare your farm for the worst.
In Harvestella, you can explore other towns such as Nemea Town, which features cherry trees regardless of the season. There is also the Holy Capital of Argene, which is predominantly snowy. In these areas, you will experience different opportunities while meeting potential allies who will help you to survive the Quietus.
Like in Final Fantasy, you may switch between jobs to deal more damage against your enemies. There are numerous moves to utilize including heavy strikes and martial attacks, as well as casting elemental magical spells, to target their weak points. It is a combat system that is not only familiar but also pretty intense. Harvestella will be released on July 24, 2025 via PC and Nintendo Switch for USD 59.99.
God of War Ragnarok (November 9)
Last but not least is the much-awaited sequel to God of War, which isGod of War Ragnarok. The events here take place 3 years after its predecessor. Kratos and his son Atreus are on a mission to prevent the prophesied Ragnarok that would destroy the world while uncovering the truth behind Atreus’ heritage. Doing so will push them to explore the nine realms where they will encounter the remaining members of the Norse pantheon such as Tyr, Thor, and Freya.
However, the question remains. In an effort to stop the end of the world, will they leave behind the bodies of the gods in their wake? How much war do they actually need to wage? In the gameplay trailer last year, we saw the return of both the Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos, both of which are extremely satisfying weapons to take down any foe. Of course, we were treated to gratuitous amounts of violence, thanks to the God of War’s rage. Combat equally looked just as exciting and thrilling as the 2018 entry into the series.
We also see the return of many familiar faces, such as our talkative storyteller Mimir, and siblings Brok and Sindri to assist Kratos in terms of weapon and armor upgrades. We cannot wait to see what other changes will take place in the game. Will we get more weapon options? New, flashy skills to perform better? Or maybe even the return of the optional, but satisfying Valkyrie mini bosses? Only time will tell. God of War Ragnarok is still set to be released on July 22, 2025 via PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
Best RPGs Coming Out in 2022 - Nightingale Early Access (Q4 2022)
Nightingaleis developed and published by Inflexion Games, which is comprised of those who have worked on beloved classics such asMass EffectandDragon Age. The game is an open-world fantasySurvival RPGwhere you play as a Realmwalker who explores multiple Fae lands by traveling from one portal to the next in an attempt to understand the secrets of magic.
One day, however, the Arcane Portal Network collapsed, leaving you and the others stranded in a single realm. To stay alive and eventually return to Nightingale, you must explore this area, scrounge whatever resources you may, craft equipment, and build your very own estate. You will also craft Realm Cards to visit specific types of realms. This game features multiple biomes such as forests, jungles, and deserts, each with their fantastical creatures and special resources to offer to further improve your base.
Nightingale also provides you with distinct choices in terms of how you wish to interact with the characters and creatures you meet. For instance, you’re able to choose to antagonize a giant, which may result in your demise, or to offer him a gift, rewarding you with the items you need in return.
This survival RPG’s combat system is done in an intense first-person perspective with familiar weapons and tools from the Victorian Era. However, what’s important to remember is that not every encounter will necessarily turn into a fight since you still have the option to go for the non-combative route. Nightingale Early Access, which can be played solo or with friends, will be released in Q4 of 2022 via PC. No price has been revealed just yet.
Hogwarts Legacy (Holiday 2022)
Next on our list is the highly anticipated open-world action RPG, which isHogwarts Legacydeveloped by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games. The RPG will take you back to the 1800s when you start your studies at Hogwarts as a fifth-year student. Like in Harry Potter, there have been rumored rebellions as well as wizards turning to the dark side. As such, your task is to save Hogwarts from total destruction.
Hogwarts Legacy has been in the works for quite some time now. In the gameplay reveal back in March, we get to see the Sorting Hat as part of our first foray into the school grounds, and character customization options including the talents, spells, and potions that can be upgraded. You will also meet and form relationships with NPCs who can potentially become your companions to go with you on perilous quests.
And of course, part of the game includes living life as a student so you will attend classes like Defense Against the Dark Arts and Charms, much like in the Harry Potter universe. These will allow you to improve your expertise and skills that you can eventually use in combat. Speaking of combat, there is no shortage of spells to cast to gain an advantage on the battlefield so you are able to stun your enemies and blast them into oblivion. You can even throw objects to debilitate them.

Circus Electrique (2022)
Circus Electriqueis a steampunk tacticalTurn-based RPGset in the late 1800s in Victorian London. What’s immediately apparent is its meticulously colorful circus-themed visual design that will remind players of We Happy Few peppered with Bioshock Infinite’s shadow. The premise is straightforward in that all of London has been transformed into maddened killers out for blood except for the Circus Electrique. So it is up to you and your special crew to save the country.
The game features a total of 15 archetypes, each with its unique traits. You have the Strongmen who are able to deal AoE damage, Clowns who can heal their comrades by making them laugh, together with Escape Artists and Fire Blowers. Circus Electrique’s combat system is similar toDarkest Dungeon’swhere you will have to strategically determine the ideal position of your characters to maximize their abilities. For example, the Strongman can only hit multiple opponents using the Boomerang skill if he were positioned in the 3rd or 4th slot.
Another thing to consider is the Shillings you earn by performing tricks despite your maddened audience. Earning money allows you to rebuild the circus to its former glory, recruit more members, and pay the ones you have in your party. After all, the show must go on! Circus Electrique is developed by Zen Studios and published by Saber Interactive. It will be released sometime in 2022 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
